MUSCAT, OCT 13
Oman’s weightlifting team returned from the Arab Weightlifting Championship in Mostaganem, Algeria, with an impressive haul of seven medals, including three golds, three silvers and one bronze, underlining the team’s competitiveness against established lifters from across the Arab region.
Amer al Khanjari led Oman’s medal-winning campaign with three gold medals in the 85 kg category, delivering a standout performance to emerge as one of the team’s leading performers. Hood al Khusaibi added three silver medals in the 55 kg category, while Murshid al Ajmi secured bronze in the 95 kg category.
Yousef al Hasani, the team’s delegation administrator, praised the lifters for their determination and commitment throughout the competition, noting that they faced opponents with greater experience and considerable physical and technical strength.
He said the athletes approached their events with seriousness and determination, and their efforts were rewarded with a strong medal tally, Al Hasani singled out Al Khanjari and Al Ajmi for special praise, highlighting their impressive performances and lifts that drew an enthusiastic response from spectators.
The results, he added, reflected the preparations undertaken ahead of the championship, including an internal training camp designed to improve the athletes’ readiness and strengthen their ability to compete at a high level.
Al Hasani described the Arab Championship as an important stop on Oman’s competition calendar, given the standard of participation and the presence of teams from North Africa, West Asia and the Gulf region. 'Competing against lifters from these countries provides valuable experience and helps the Omani athletes assess their progress against a broad range of opponents.'
The Mostaganem campaign is part of a wider preparation programme aimed at improving the team’s technical and physical levels ahead of a demanding schedule of regional and international competitions.
WEST ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Oman’s next assignments include the West Asian Championship, scheduled for early December, followed by the Qatar Cup, which offers a qualification pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The latter will be particularly important for lifters seeking to strengthen their prospects of earning an Olympic place.
The team is also preparing for the Asian Indoor Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where Oman expects to field approximately three athletes, according to Al Hasani.
He stressed that the medals won in Algeria should serve as motivation for further progress, crediting the athletes, coaches and administrative staff for their collective contribution to the achievement.
The seven-medal return provides a positive foundation for Oman’s upcoming commitments, while continued training and international competition will be crucial to building the experience and consistency needed to pursue stronger results at continental and Olympic level.
