MUSCAT: The fifth Oman Electricity and Energy Conference opens on Monday, October 12, at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, bringing together an expected 4,200 participants from 47 countries to discuss energy transition and electricity grid resilience.
The three-day event will be held under the theme “Empowering the Future of Energy: Energy Transition Pathways and Grid Resilience in an Increasingly Complex Environment”.
Eng Mohsin bin Hamad al Hadhrami, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, will preside over the opening ceremony.
Hosted by Nama Electricity Distribution Company in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the conference will feature more than 70 expert speakers and industry leaders.
Discussions will cover six areas: electricity markets; sustainable energy and storage; energy systems and grid solutions; distribution systems; energy efficiency; and asset management and performance optimisation.
An accompanying exhibition will feature 75 local and international companies showcasing technologies for power generation, transmission, distribution and smart grids.
Al Hadhrami said hosting the conference reinforced Oman’s position as a regional centre for specialised energy sector dialogue. The sector’s transformation requires more flexible and reliable grids capable of integrating renewable energy, supporting Oman Vision 2040 and the country’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050, he said.
Eng Alaa bin Hassan bin Mousa, Chief Executive Officer of Nama Electricity Distribution Company, said hosting the event reflected the company’s commitment to adopting modern technologies and developing its distribution networks.
He said the fifth edition would focus on translating energy transition strategies into practical projects. The development of Oman’s energy sector requires closer coordination between government bodies, utilities, industrial companies and technology providers, he added.
Eng Abdullah bin Sulaiman al Wahaibi, Chairman of the Oman Society of Engineers, said the conference’s growth reflected demand for technical dialogue that connects engineering knowledge with practical applications and helps develop Omani talent.
The event began in 2020 as a knowledge-sharing initiative for electricity and energy professionals. By 2022, it had developed into a specialised conference featuring technical sessions, workshops and a technology exhibition. — ONA
