Oman airspace seeing overflight fluctuations: CAA

 

Muscat: The Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) handling Omani airspace have a proven track record in handing extra flight movements and they are used to handle such situations.

Speaking to the Observer, Naif al Abri, President, Civil Aviation Authority, said, 'There has been an increase in the number of flights overflying the Omani airspace by around by 20 percent to 40 percent, which keeps changing day by day depending on the geopolitical situation in the region. and the status of the neighboring Flight Information Region (FIR), which we are adapting as it rises.' 

He added the at the Oman is very much used to how to handle such situations and has a proven strong track record in this area. 

The Air Traffic Controllers in Oman are currently handling around 2, 100 overflying flights daily, which is significantly more than around 1,600 flights in the normal flights a few days ago, 

Muscat Airport saw flight movements of over 8,500 in August this year, according to the latest statistics of the National Centre of Statistics and Information (NCSI).

 Kamil al Awadhi, IATA's Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, had earleir described Oman’s handling of the situation as 'highly impressive'.
He noted that it was incredible to see how the team accommodated a massive surge in volume with 'almost no obstacles during difficult times in the second quarter of this year, especially in March.
