MUSCAT: Oman’s Olympic football team marked their return to international action with a 2-0 victory over Tajikistan in a friendly match at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat.
The match, played on October 3, formed part of the team’s ongoing internal training camp under national head coach Badr al Maimani as Oman step up preparations for their forthcoming regional assignments.
The Olympic Reds used the encounter as an important technical and physical test following a lengthy break from training camps. The coaching staff were able to assess the players’ condition, test different options and evaluate the squad’s readiness as preparations gradually move into a more competitive phase.
The current camp carries particular importance for Al Maimani and his technical staff, with the Olympic side returning to an extended training programme after an absence of nearly six months. Their previous gathering, held in March, lasted only five days.
Running from September 26 until October 7, the Muscat camp provides the technical staff with a longer period to monitor the players, restore match fitness and sharpen technical and physical levels while improving understanding and coordination within the squad.
Al Maimani called up 24 players for the camp as part of preparations for the West Asia competition scheduled for November. The extended gathering is expected to give the coaching staff a clearer picture of the options available and help identify the players best suited to the tactical and technical requirements of the next stage.
The Tajikistan friendly is one of the key tests in the team’s gradual build-up, particularly after the prolonged period without regular national-team gatherings. The technical staff are looking to use the friendly matches to regain competitive rhythm while giving players opportunities to prove themselves.
Oman and Tajikistan will meet again in Muscat on October 6 in the second of their two scheduled friendlies. The return fixture will offer Al Maimani and his staff another opportunity to rotate the squad, address observations from the opening match and continue developing cohesion within the group.
