The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT), in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has invited proposals from international and local operators, manufacturers, technology providers, research institutions, and industry partners developing AAM solutions for live field performances and trials (sandbox).

An AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) sandbox is a controlled, regulatory-friendly environment designed to test and certify eVTOL aircraft and autonomous flight technologies..

MTCIT and CAA which are developing  Oman's National Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Strategy will conduct the event from December 6–10.

According to MTCIT, participants will have the opportunity to deploy and test their aircraft, drones, systems, sensors, payloads, and supporting technologies within Oman's National AAM Sandbox across key sectors, including delivery, healthcare, security, agriculture, and air taxis.

In line with Oman Vision 2040, the Sultanate has been focusing on innovation, economic diversification, and the adoption of advanced technologies to build a sustainable, globally competitive economy, the ministry said.

Selected participants will be able to demonstrate innovative AAM solutions within Oman's national regulatory sandbox, collaborate with MTCIT, the CAA, and other relevant government entities, validate technologies, operations, and business models under real-world conditions, and contribute to the development of Oman's future regulatory framework to shape the future of Advanced Air Mobility in the country.

Speaking to the Oman Observer earlier this year, Hamed al Brashdi, Director General of Strategic Planning at the CAA, stated: “The aviation strategy includes three initiatives for advanced air mobility. The first initiative is about setting regulations; the second focuses on sandboxing—a controlled area for operations and trials; and the third involves the Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM), creating a digital, collaborative ecosystem designed to safely manage unmanned aircraft operations, primarily at low altitudes.”

The companies, including Omani entreprenuers are currently working on developing prototypes, still in the experimental stage on projects such as the unmanned aircraft that can be used for cargo or small shipments.
