Oman’s first robotic observatory opens at Jabal Shams

AL HAMRA: The Oman Astronomical and Space Society inaugurated its new astronomical observatory at the Jabal Shams Resort in the Wilayat of Al Hamra, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. It is the Society’s first fully integrated, remotely operated robotic astronomical observatory.
The inauguration ceremony was held under the auspices of Sayyid Ibrahim bin Said al Busaidi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism.
This initiative aims to boost the presence of astronomy and support fields such as astronomical observation, astrophotography, and scientific and educational activities within the Sultanate of Oman.
The launch of the observatory represents a technological leap that opens up vast horizons for astronomical observation and imaging, and scientific research. It utilises remote operation and control technologies to serve researchers, students, and astronomy and space enthusiasts.
The project is supported by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) as part of its community investment efforts, its support for scientific and knowledge-based initiatives, and its commitment to fostering partnerships in science and innovation. Furthermore, the project leverages the strategic location of Jabal Shams, which is renowned for its high altitude and exceptional sky clarity, to create a comprehensive environment that integrates scientific research, community outreach, and astrophotography, while offering researchers, enthusiasts, and visitors the opportunity to explore the astronomical wonders of Oman’s skies.
Dr Ishaq bin Yahya al Shueili, Oman Astronomical and Space Society Chairman, said that the launch of the observatory aims to enhance the Society’s advanced astronomical capabilities and integrate positive community engagement with its various activities and events.
Al Shueili added that the project serves as a major tourism draw for the Sultanate of Oman.
