UTAS outlines plans for Oman Vision 2040

The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) has outlined its achievements and future directions in academic education, research, innovation and digital transformation as it seeks to strengthen its contribution to Oman Vision 2040.
At a media briefing on Monday, the university highlighted its efforts to develop technical and applied education, enhance academic programmes, strengthen scientific research and innovation, develop national talent and expand partnerships with government and private sector institutions.
Dr Ahmed bin Jumaa bin Khalaf Al Riyami, Assistant Vice-Rector for Administrative and Financial Affairs and official spokesperson of UTAS, said the briefing provided an opportunity to highlight the university's achievements and present its strategic directions for the coming phase.
He said the university is focusing on developing academic programmes and specialisations, strengthening research and innovation, enhancing the capabilities of academic and administrative staff, supporting students and talent, and expanding partnerships with the labour market.
The university is also working on initiatives related to employment, workforce replacement and national competency development, alongside institutional and digital transformation projects and improvements to services and infrastructure across its branches.
Al Riyami said the briefing was not limited to reviewing achievements but also served as a platform to present the university's strategic initiatives for the next phase.
He noted that UTAS's future priorities include supporting a knowledge- and innovation-based economy and preparing graduates with the skills needed to contribute to Oman's development.
UTAS continues to review its academic programmes and learning environments to ensure they respond to technological developments and changing labour market requirements. The university is also expanding postgraduate education to provide greater opportunities for advanced study and specialised research.
Research and innovation remain key areas of focus, with the university seeking to encourage projects addressing national priorities and providing practical solutions to challenges facing society and various economic sectors.
The university is also increasing the use of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in education, research and institutional development as part of its broader digital transformation programme.
Entrepreneurship is another area receiving attention, with UTAS seeking to encourage students to develop innovative ideas into projects that can contribute to economic and social development.
The university is also strengthening cooperation with government and private sector institutions in areas including training, research, innovation and knowledge transfer. Such partnerships are intended to strengthen links between academic programmes and labour market requirements.
Developing national talent remains a key priority, with UTAS continuing to support professional development, academic qualifications and succession programmes aimed at building a sustainable pool of national expertise.
Looking ahead, the university plans to further develop academic and postgraduate programmes, expand research and innovation activities, accelerate digital transformation and increase the use of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
It also aims to broaden local and international partnerships with academic, research and professional institutions to facilitate knowledge exchange, joint research and innovation initiatives, and greater exposure to international practices.
The university said its future plans are closely aligned with changing labour market needs and Oman's broader drive towards a knowledge-based economy.
