Sur festival celebrates Oman’s camel heritage

In Sur, the bond between Omanis and their camels remains woven into the fabric of community life. At the Al Ardha Camel Race, that enduring connection came alive through camel traditions, folk performances and a heritage village that brought generations together.
Held under the auspices of Mohammed bin Salim al Araimi, head of the Sur Camel Committee and chairman of the organising committee, the event brought camel owners and trainers together in a celebration that placed heritage at its heart.
More than a display of camel traditions, the event offered a reminder of the importance of passing customs from one generation to the next. For the Sur Camel Committee, preserving this heritage also means ensuring that younger Omanis remain connected to traditions that have long been part of society.
“This is a heritage we are proud of as Omanis, and we are working through the Sur Camel Committee to promote it and introduce younger generations to it,” al Araimi said.
The participation of camel owners and trainers formed an important part of the event, with al Araimi thanking them for their contribution, alongside those who supported the traditional displays, folk performances and heritage village.
The organisers thanked Shaikh Dr Saif bin Mohammed al Ghaithi, Wali of Sur, for his support for heritage activities in the wilayat, while recognising participating companies and institutions.
Their involvement reflected the wider community effort behind the event, with committee members, camel owners, trainers and participants each contributing to its success.
By bringing together camel traditions, cultural performances and a heritage village, the Al Ardha Camel Race created a space where Oman’s past could be celebrated while keeping its traditions meaningful for generations to come.
