Khareef Dhofar draws 1.1m visitors by end-August

The Khareef Dhofar Season attracted 1,116,051 visitors between June 21 and August 31, 2026, marking an 8.6 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, according to data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
Omani visitors accounted for the largest share, with 816,719 arrivals, representing 73.2 per cent of the total. Visitors from GCC countries numbered 183,861, while those from other nationalities reached 115,471.
The figures highlight the continued popularity of Dhofar as a summer destination, with domestic tourism accounting for the bulk of visitor arrivals alongside a strong flow from GCC and international markets.
Of the total visitors, 284,667 arrived in Dhofar by air during the period. Road travel remains an important mode of transport, particularly for Omani and GCC visitors taking advantage of road links between Dhofar, other parts of Oman and neighbouring Gulf countries.
The Khareef season transforms Dhofar during the summer months, bringing cooler temperatures, mist-covered landscapes and lush greenery, while offering a mix of natural, cultural and recreational attractions.
The seasonal influx also provides a significant boost to the local tourism economy, benefiting hotels, furnished apartments, restaurants, cafes, transport and car rental operators, tour companies, retailers and small and medium enterprises.
GCC visitors remain an important segment of the market, with the 183,861 arrivals recorded by the end of August, reflecting strong regional demand. Dhofar's relatively cooler weather, natural attractions, road accessibility and family-oriented activities continue to make it an attractive summer destination for Gulf visitors.
Despite the strong regional and international presence, domestic tourism remains the main driver of the season. The 816,719 Omani visitors underline Dhofar's appeal among residents seeking cooler weather and a seasonal change from the high summer temperatures elsewhere in Oman.
Meanwhile, the 115,471 visitors from other nationalities highlight opportunities to further strengthen Dhofar's appeal in international markets, particularly among travellers interested in nature, culture and distinctive seasonal experiences.
The 8.6 per cent year-on-year growth points to continued momentum in Dhofar's tourism sector and reinforces the economic importance of the Khareef season to the governorate.
With visitor numbers surpassing 1.1 million by the end of August, continued attention to infrastructure, visitor services, traffic management and destination development will be important to accommodate growing demand while preserving Dhofar's natural and environmental assets.
