Oman launches Green AI Alliance

MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman has established a Green AI Alliance to promote energy-efficient artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, as the country seeks to build a sustainable digital economy powered increasingly by renewable energy.
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology held the alliance’s inaugural meeting on Monday in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), bringing together government and private-sector representatives.
The alliance will focus on integrating renewable and green energy into AI and high-performance computing infrastructure, while supporting research into low-emission and net-zero computing technologies.
At the meeting, members approved the alliance’s founding document, established a technical committee and reviewed its 2026 work plan.
The initiative brings together government agencies, businesses, academic and research institutions and investors to develop a national ecosystem for Green AI and attract local and international partnerships.
Oman is seeking to expand its digital economy while managing the growing energy requirements associated with AI and data-intensive computing. Greater use of renewable power and energy-efficient computing could help reduce emissions while supporting the country’s broader economic diversification objectives under Oman Vision 2040.
The alliance will also encourage private companies to adopt cleaner technologies and explore incentives aimed at accelerating investment and innovation in sustainable computing.
Other priorities include developing national expertise, supporting Green AI projects with potential economic returns and strengthening cooperation with international organisations and research institutions.
The initiative will seek to draw on global expertise and standards covering sustainable AI, renewable-powered computing and green innovation.
The alliance plans to expand its membership to include additional local and international participants as Oman seeks to position itself as a regional platform for sustainable AI and renewable-energy-powered digital infrastructure. — ONA
