Oman's Fukuoka campaign ends without a win

Oman’s hopes of extending their Asian Championship campaign ended on Wednesday with a 3-0 defeat to Bahrain in their final Pool A match in Fukuoka, Japan.
Bahrain won 25-16, 25-19, 25-23, but the victory was not enough to secure a quarterfinal place. India claimed the final berth as the second-best third-placed team, edging Bahrain on point ratio after the sides finished level on wins, ranking points and set ratio.
Oman completed their campaign without a victory, following earlier defeats to Japan and Australia, although they showed encouraging periods against all three opponents.
Oman began confidently, capitalising on Bahrain’s early errors before Mahmoud al Saadi and Osama al Maamari helped establish a 5-2 lead. Majid al Shibli, Falah al Jaradi and Saud al Maamari also contributed as the national side moved 9-5 ahead.
Bahrain gradually found their rhythm, drawing level at 11-11 before taking control through effective blocking and stronger attacking. Oman struggled to maintain their early momentum as Bahrain closed the opening set 25-16.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Bahrain moved 5-1 ahead, but Falah al Jaradi and Adam al Jaradi helped Oman reduce the deficit to 6-4. The Bahrainis responded with greater consistency in attack and at the net, eventually taking the set 25-19.
Oman produced their strongest resistance in the third set. Al Shibli contributed important attacking points, while improved blocking and defensive work helped the national side recover from 11-7 down to level at 12-12.
The teams exchanged points during a closely contested second half of the set. Bahrain moved 17-14 ahead, but Oman remained within reach and continued to press for a fourth set. The Bahrainis held their nerve in the closing exchanges to complete the victory 25-23.
Falah al Jaradi led Oman with 13 points, sharing match-high honours with Bahrain’s Sayed Hashem Ali. Majid al Shibli added 11 points, while Bahrain’s Hasan Haider Mohamed contributed 11, including seven successful blocks.
Oman had opened the tournament with a 3-1 defeat to hosts Japan, taking the third set 25-20, before losing 3-0 to Australia.
The campaign followed Oman’s historic West Asian title triumph in Muscat. Although the step up in continental competition proved demanding, head coach Nizar al Shukaili gave younger players opportunities alongside experienced members of the squad, providing valuable exposure against established Asian opposition.
The national team will now look to build on those experiences as it seeks greater consistency and stronger results in future international competitions.
