Marsa LNG storage tank nears completion

Marsa LNG has marked a key construction milestone at Sohar Port, with its giant 165,000-cubic-metre LNG storage tank entering the final stages of completion.
Senior executives representing project shareholders TotalEnergies and OQ Exploration and Production (OQEP), together with executive management from Energy Oman, formerly Energy Development Oman (EDO), toured the project site this week to review construction progress.
The delegation climbed to the top of the LNG storage tank, gaining a vantage point over the adjoining LNG processing train and dedicated marine jetty taking shape as part of the landmark bunkering development.
Designed by CB&I as a full-containment cryogenic structure, the tank will store LNG at around minus 160 degrees Celsius. Its inner container is fabricated from 9 per cent nickel steel, while a prestressed reinforced-concrete outer structure provides secondary containment.
Construction achieved a major engineering milestone in February when the tank’s 631-tonne steel roof was air-raised about 40 metres into position atop the concrete walls.
The tank forms a key component of the one-million-tonne-per-year Marsa LNG complex, which is being developed to establish Sohar Port as a major regional LNG bunkering hub. The project was more than 55 per cent complete at the end of June and is targeting start-up in the first quarter of 2028.
Marsa LNG is 80 per cent owned by TotalEnergies and 20 per cent by OQEP. Alongside the liquefaction train and storage infrastructure, the development includes dedicated LNG bunkering facilities designed to serve shipping in the Gulf and Sea of Oman.
