Omani artists join global art symposium in Germany

Omani artists represent Sultanate at International Art Symposium in Germany

Omani visual artists Hafsa al Tamimi and Fakhretaj al Ismaili have represented the Sultanate of Oman at the 5th Krefeld International Art Symposium in Germany, joining artists from different countries for a week of creative and cultural exchange.
Held in the German city of Krefeld from August 22 to 29, the symposium brought together a selection of international artists at the Kulturzentrum Südbahnhof. The programme culminated in a closing exhibition showcasing works created by the participating artists throughout the symposium.
Organised by Werkhaus e.V., the international gathering was designed to encourage creative exchange and cultural dialogue between artists while giving participants an opportunity to encounter different artistic experiences in an atmosphere of collaboration and inspiration.

Throughout the week, each artist developed work informed by their individual artistic practice, experiences and cultural background. Together, the works presented at the closing exhibition reflected the range of perspectives brought to Krefeld by artists from different parts of the world.
For al Tamimi and al Ismaili, participation offered an opportunity to bring Omani contemporary art into an international setting while engaging directly with artists working within different cultural and creative contexts.
“For us, participating in this international symposium was a valuable artistic and cultural experience,” al Tamimi said. “It allowed us to represent Oman through our artistic practice while also learning from artists from different backgrounds and sharing ideas and experiences with them.”
Much of the value of an international art symposium lies in what happens beyond the finished works. Artists spend time working alongside one another, observing unfamiliar techniques and discussing the experiences that influence their creative practices. In Krefeld, these encounters created opportunities for participants to discover different approaches to visual expression while sharing aspects of their own cultures.

For the Omani artists, this exchange also provided a means of introducing audiences and fellow participants to Oman through contemporary artistic expression. Their work became part of a wider international conversation in which different identities and experiences could meet through art.
The symposium highlighted how visual art can create connections across geographical and linguistic boundaries. While participating artists arrived with their own methods and influences, the shared environment allowed ideas to move between them and new professional and creative relationships to emerge.
The closing exhibition at Kulturzentrum Südbahnhof on August 29 brought together the works developed during the symposium, giving the public an opportunity to experience the different artistic perspectives that had occupied the same creative space over the preceding week.
The 5th Krefeld International Art Symposium forms part of an ongoing initiative in Krefeld that brings artists from different countries together through visual art.
For al Tamimi and al Ismaili, the experience was both an opportunity to represent Oman internationally and a chance to engage with a wider community of artists. Their participation adds another international platform for Omani visual art, allowing creative voices from the Sultanate to become part of an expanding dialogue between artists and cultures.
