ROP warns a network may be exploiting beggars

Competent authorities have warned that many beggars—including women and children—are often backed by exploitative networks. 
To support these vulnerable individuals, protect them, and limit their exploitation, the public is urged to report cases of begging by calling 1166.

'So-called beggars may present a touching story or use a child with a sad voice, but do not let your kindness be exploited by others. Help consciously through accredited charities,' stated the Ministry of Social Development (MOSD).
According to the Public Prosecution, Article 297 of the Penal Code classifies begging in mosques, streets, shops, and public or private places as a crime. This offense is punishable by up to one year in prison, a fine of RO 100, or both.
