Grand Mufti urges reflection on Prophet’s teachings

MUSCAT: His Eminence Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamed al Khalili, Grand Mufti of the Sultanate of Oman, has urged Muslims to use the commemoration of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday as an opportunity for spiritual reflection, learning and gratitude, while avoiding extravagance and practices inconsistent with Islamic teachings.
Mawlid Al Nabi, observed on 12 Rabee Al Awwal in the Islamic calendar, falls on Tuesday, August 25, this year.
In remarks ahead of the occasion, Shaikh Al Khalili stressed that the commemoration should focus on the Seerah, the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and on expressing gratitude to Allah the Almighty for sending him as a mercy to humanity.
He urged Muslims to draw lessons from the Prophet’s character and conduct, particularly his emphasis on compassion, justice, honesty, patience and unity.
The Grand Mufti also cautioned against turning the occasion into an exercise in extravagance or public display, stressing the importance of observing Islamic principles in commemorating the Prophet’s birthday.
The occasion, he noted, should encourage Muslims to strengthen their understanding of the Prophet’s Sunnah and apply its values in their daily lives.
Omani scholars have likewise highlighted the importance of studying the Prophet’s biography and drawing practical lessons from his life. They said his teachings continue to offer guidance in family life, business, social relations and community affairs.
They also emphasised that expressing love and respect for the Prophet should not be limited to the commemoration itself, but should be reflected throughout the year through ethical conduct and adherence to the Sunnah.
Oman will mark the occasion through activities organised by the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, including religious and cultural programmes, Quran recitation sessions and public lectures focusing on the Prophet’s life and teachings.
Mosques across Oman are also expected to host lectures and sermons highlighting the Prophet’s role as a teacher, statesman and moral guide, with emphasis on values such as tolerance, unity, compassion and community service.
Community organisations are also preparing charitable and social initiatives to coincide with the occasion.
The commemoration provides an opportunity to reflect on the Prophet’s message and his example, and to translate those teachings into everyday conduct, scholars said.
Shaikh Al Khalili called on Muslims to make the occasion a starting point for continued reflection, learning and practice, stressing that the values associated with the Prophet’s life should guide people not only during Mawlid but throughout the year.
