Ukraine marks 35 years, highlights Oman ties

On August 24, 2026, Ukraine celebrates the 35th anniversary of its independence. This date marked the beginning of a new chapter in the development of modern Ukrainian statehood and set the course for Ukraine’s further development as a sovereign and independent state.
On August 24, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. On December 1, 1991, Ukraine’s independence was confirmed by the results of the nationwide referendum.
Ukraine’s subsequent international recognition and the establishment of diplomatic relations with countries around the world laid the foundation for its active participation in international political, economic and humanitarian cooperation.
Over the past thirty-five years, Ukraine has built modern state institutions, expanded its international partnerships and strengthened its role in international cooperation. Despite ongoing security challenges, Ukraine continues to implement reforms, maintain economic resilience and remain committed to the principles of international law, peace and sustainable development.
Ukraine and the Sultanate of Oman have maintained diplomatic relations since May 19, 1992. Since then, cooperation between the two countries has steadily developed on the basis of mutual respect, sovereign equality and the principles of international law.
The Honorary Consulate of Ukraine in Muscat, which has been operating since 2009 under the leadership of the Honorary Consul of Ukraine, Hani Jumaan Ashour al Rajab, plays an important role in advancing bilateral relations. Its activities contribute to the development of trade and economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and stronger ties between Ukraine and the Sultanate of Oman.
The opening of the Embassy of Ukraine in Muscat in October 2024 marked the beginning of a new chapter in Ukrainian-Omani relations. In July 2025, the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Sultanate of Oman was appointed, representing an important step in the development of bilateral cooperation.
Over the past year, the Ukrainian-Omani political dialogue has intensified significantly. In 2026, the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and the Sultanate of Oman held two meetings and three telephone conversations. A meeting was also held between the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine and the Foreign Minister of the Sultanate of Oman.
In March 2026, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Ukraine, Maitha bint Saif al Mahrouqi, presented copies of her credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. On July 30, 2026, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky received her credentials during an official ceremony in Kyiv.
At the same time, the legal framework for bilateral cooperation has been expanded, while new initiatives have been launched in healthcare, education, energy, trade, investment, culture and innovation. Engagement between businesses, as well as scientific, medical and cultural institutions of the two countries, has also intensified.
Trade and economic cooperation continue to demonstrate positive momentum. In 2025, bilateral trade amounted to $138.26 million. During the first half of 2026, it reached $73.76 million, confirming the steady development of economic ties between Ukraine and the Sultanate of Oman.
Ukraine regards the Sultanate of Oman as an important partner in the Gulf region and is interested in further expanding bilateral cooperation. Promising areas include investment, trade, transport and logistics, food security, digital transformation, renewable energy, healthcare, education, science and innovation.
Ukraine highly values its constructive engagement with the Sultanate of Oman and is confident that the continued development of bilateral relations serves the interests of both countries and their peoples. With confidence in the further strengthening of this partnership, Ukraine and the Sultanate of Oman continue to advance their bilateral relations, which have every prerequisite for long-term and mutually beneficial cooperation.
On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Sultanate of Oman expresses its sincere gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the Foreign Ministry of the Sultanate of Oman, and, in particular, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, as well as to international partners, the Ukrainian community in the Sultanate of Oman and all those who contribute to the development of the Ukrainian-Omani partnership, for their valuable contribution to strengthening bilateral relations, mutual understanding and cooperation.
