Sohar Port sees 52% jump in cargo handling

Suhar: The total cargo handling volume at Sohar Port reached 52 million metric tons during the first half of this year, an increase of 52 percent compared to the same period last year.
Sohar Port recorded stable operational performance across its various handling activities during the first half of 2026, supported by continued growth in transshipment operations, which reached 24.38 million metric tons.
Container handling also increased by 40 percent to reach 545,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), while general cargo handling more than doubled to reach 1.24 million metric tons.

During the first half of this year, the port received approximately 1,555 vessels, reflecting the efficiency of its operational system despite a decline in dry bulk cargo handling.
Existing and expansion projects at Sohar Port and Freezone continued to progress according to their implementation plans, with total investments reaching RO2.62 billion.

Emile Hoogsteden, CEO of Sohar Port, affirmed that these results reflect the ability of Sohar Port and Freezone to meet the demands of regional and international trade and continue supporting supply chains through an integrated system that combines the port, the freezone, and the industrial and logistics sectors.
He stated that Sohar Port and Freezone continues to invest in developing its infrastructure, enhancing maritime connectivity, and increasing its operational efficiency to ensure the continued creation of long-term value for customers, partners, and the national economy. He noted that this investment strengthens the integrated system's readiness for future growth and expansion and consolidates the Sultanate of Oman's position as a hub connected to global markets.
Sohar Free Zone continued to attract high-quality investments during the first half of 2026, coinciding with the expansion of its industrial base and solidifying its position as a regional investment gateway. The zone witnessed the signing of five new investment agreements worth RO226.47 million, reflecting investor confidence in the free zone.
Leased warehouse space also increased by 19 percent, reaching approximately 37,000 square meters, driven by growing demand for industrial and logistics facilities.
