Oman issues guidance on safe school backpacks ahead of new academic year

MUSCAT: As schools across Oman prepare to reopen after the summer vacation, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion has highlighted the approved safety requirements for school backpacks, urging parents to pay attention to their design, weight and suitability for children.

The ministry said the Omani/GCC Standard OS GSO 2656 sets unified requirements for the quality and safety of school backpacks, with the aim of protecting students’ health and well-being.

According to the standard, the weight of a school backpack should not exceed 10 per cent of a child’s body weight. The backpack should also have wide, padded and adjustable shoulder straps, as well as a padded back panel to reduce pressure on the back.

The standard further recommends backpacks made from safe and environmentally friendly materials and designed with multiple compartments to help distribute weight evenly.

A properly fitted backpack should cover the area from the upper back to the lower rib cage and should not extend below the child’s waist.

The ministry said following these requirements can help protect the spine and muscles from strain and reduce health risks associated with unsuitable school backpacks.

The guidance comes as parents and students prepare for the start of the new academic year, with the ministry encouraging greater awareness of health and safety when choosing school supplies.
