Oman intensifies seafood safety checks after ship grounding

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is continuing to monitor developments following the grounding of a ship near Al Qibliyah Island in the Al Hallaniyat Islands, Dhofar Governorate.

In coordination with the relevant authorities, the ministry is also monitoring the area for any potential impact on the marine environment.

As a precautionary measure, the Food Safety and Quality Centre is conducting inspections and collecting samples of fish products available in local markets. The samples are being tested to ensure they are safe and comply with approved health standards.

The ministry urged fishermen and other sea users to follow official instructions and report any oil slicks, unusual odours, or noticeable changes in seawater or marine life. Fishermen were also advised to avoid fishing in areas where such signs are observed.

The ministry stressed that the measures are precautionary and aimed at safeguarding fish products and protecting consumers. It also called on the public to rely only on official sources for information.
