835 cochlear implants boost hearing care at Al Nahda Hospital

MUSCAT: The cochlear implant team at Al Nahda Hospital has performed more than 835 surgeries as part of its ongoing programme to enhance specialised services. The hospital affirms its leadership as a reference centre for this type of surgeries in the Sultanate of Oman.
A cochlear implant surgery involves the insertion of an electronic device into the inner ear for people who suffer severe hearing loss. The device stimulates the auditory nerve and helps the brain receive sound signals.
Al Nahda Hospital cochlear implant team goes on periodic visits to different governorates of the Sultanate of Oman to perform such operations and facilitate access to specialised care as part of a programme of diversification of health services.
The Hospital lays emphasis on the importance of early diagnosis of cases of hearing loss, notably among children. It stresses that cochlear implantation contributes to the rehabilitation of auditory and speech abilities.
Recently, Al Nahda Hospital cochlear implant team performed one of the smallest cochlear implant surgeries in the world. The surgery was conducted on a 9-week-old baby.
