BTS withdraws from 2027 Grammys

K-pop group BTS said last week that they will not submit music for consideration at the 69th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2027, citing dissatisfaction with the Recording Academy’s new best Asian pop music performance category.
It marks the first time the South Korean group has opted out of the awards. The seven members shared the decision on Instagram.
“We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year. I hope that music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language,” they wrote.
Announced on June 16, the category recognises Asian pop performances originating from or widely recognised within Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop, featuring the meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.
The Recording Academy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
BTS returned from a hiatus following the members’ completion of military service with their comeback album “ARIRANG” on March 20. The album topped the Billboard 200 for two consecutive weeks, setting a new record for a K-pop act.
Tickets for the group’s South Korean concerts sold out rapidly during the January presale, while the North American and European legs of the tour sold out within hours, according to Hybe, the agency managing BTS.
In May, BTS won artist of the year at the 52nd American Music Awards, beating Taylor Swift and other major artists. The group also received two additional awards.
