Don't Let the Heat Stop Your Fitness

Summer in Oman is known for its bright sunshine and soaring temperatures. During the hottest months, many people reduce their physical activity because exercising outdoors can be uncomfortable and, at times, unsafe. As a result, fitness routines are often put on hold until the weather becomes cooler.
However, our health does not need to take a summer break. The answer is not to stop exercising, but to adapt our routines and exercise smarter.
For those who enjoy walking, jogging or cycling, the timing of the activity can make a significant difference. Exercising early in the morning or after sunset, when temperatures are lower, is safer and more comfortable. Strenuous outdoor exercise during the hottest hours of the day should be avoided, as excessive heat can increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.
On particularly hot days, indoor spaces can provide an effective alternative. A living room, apartment gym, workplace fitness room or local gym can become the perfect place to stay active. Maintaining movement does not require complicated equipment or lengthy workouts. A simple 20-minute routine can include five minutes of gentle stretching, 10 minutes of brisk walking, stair climbing, squats, wall push-ups or dancing, followed by five minutes of deep breathing and light stretching.
Even a short routine can help improve circulation, maintain muscle strength and reduce stress. What matters is making movement a regular part of the day rather than believing that exercise is only worthwhile when it is intense or time-consuming.
In Oman’s climate, hydration must also be viewed as an essential part of fitness. Water should be consumed regularly throughout the day rather than only when thirst begins. Anyone exercising outdoors should carry a water bottle and take breaks whenever necessary.
The summer holidays can also offer opportunities to make physical activity part of family life. Families can visit indoor sports facilities, take evening walks when the weather cools, or plan weekend outings to beaches, parks or the mountains during suitable hours. These activities encourage movement while allowing families to spend quality time together.
Many people believe that missing a few workouts means they have failed, but fitness is built through consistency, not perfection. Even 20 minutes of movement each day is better than doing nothing at all. Summer may change where and when we exercise, but it does not have to determine whether we exercise.
The weather should not decide our health goals. By adjusting our routines, staying hydrated, choosing cooler hours and continuing to move, we can remain active throughout the summer. A little activity each day can be enough to keep us on the path towards a healthier lifestyle.
