MUSCAT: Oman’s promising sprinter Ahmed al Jabri will take on some of the world’s leading young athletes when he competes in the men’s 100m at the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 26 in Eugene, United States, on Thursday.
The championships are being staged at the renowned Hayward Field from August 5 to 9, bringing together emerging athletics talents from across the globe.
According to the official start list, Al Jabri will compete from lane six in Heat 6, scheduled to begin at local time 12:14 pm (11:14 pm Oman time). He will line up against athletes from the United States, Australia, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Monaco and Bermuda.
The top three athletes from each heat, along with the three fastest remaining runners across the eight heats, will qualify for the semifinals.
Al Jabri enters the championship with a personal and season’s best of 10.69 seconds, achieved during the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong in May. That performance saw the young Omani improve his previous personal best of 10.80 seconds and advance to the semifinals of the continental competition.
He is accompanied by Dr Ali al Marzouqi, Vice-Chairman of the Oman Athletics Association, who heads the administrative delegation and is overseeing the support provided to the athlete during the global championship. Al Marzouqi has previously served as the administrative supervisor of Oman’s athletics delegations at international competitions.
VALUABLE OPPORTUNITY
Al Marzouqi said Al Jabri’s appearance at the World U20 Championships represented an important step in the development of Omani athletics and formed part of the association’s long-term plan to prepare athletes capable of competing at world and Olympic level.
“Our presence at this global event reflects the association’s determination to represent Oman at the highest international level,” he said.
“This participation is not simply about being present. It provides Ahmed with a valuable opportunity to compete against some of the world’s best young sprinters and benefit from a highly competitive environment.”
Al Jabri underwent an intensive preparation programme ahead of the championship, with training focused on improving his starting reaction, acceleration, maximum speed and technical balance throughout the different phases of the race. His programme also included performance analysis and specialised physical conditioning to ensure he arrived in Oregon in the best possible shape.
The Omani sprinter will be aiming to produce a strong performance and improve his personal best while gaining further experience at the highest level of international junior competition.
His appearance in Oregon also underlines the Oman Athletics Association’s efforts to provide talented young athletes with greater international exposure and establish a clear pathway towards the senior national team.
