Four Omani teachers win global GLOBE environmental competition

Muscat: Four teachers from the Sultanate of Oman have achieved a new global milestone by winning the GLOBE environmental competition, held for the first time alongside the FIFA World Cup. The teachers were recognised for their outstanding project on monitoring daily environmental data at football stadiums.

The winners are Fakhriya bint Saud al Balushi from Sawdah Um AL momneen Basic Education Girls; Hidaya bint Sulaiman al Farsi from Asma bint Omais Basic Education School in Al Dhahirah Governorate; Yusra bint Humaid al Dhawi from Sumaya for Basic Education School; and Ali bin Rashid al Jufaili from Abdulrahman bin Abi Bakr Basic Education School in Al Sharqiyah North Governorate.

The achievement follows the distinction of Omani participants at the level of the Near East and North Africa region, where they implemented a project to monitor daily environmental data at local football stadiums. The project included measurements of air temperature, land surface temperature and land cover, with the data regularly uploaded to the global GLOBE programme platform throughout the competition period.

The accomplishment reflects the continued success of the Ministry of Education in the field of environmental education and highlights its efforts to promote scientific research culture and enable teachers and students to actively participate in international scientific programmes. It also contributes to preparing a generation that is aware of environmental issues and sustainable development goals.

The GLOBE Programme is a global science and education initiative launched in 1995 with the support of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and several international organisations. It involves 127 countries worldwide and aims to enhance environmental awareness through field-based observations and by engaging students and teachers in collecting scientific data.
