Medical tourism fuels economic growth

Medical and health tourism has become one of the promising sectors receiving increasing global attention, not only as a healthcare service, but as an integrated economic ecosystem connected with investment, tourism, transportation, insurance, education and professional training.

Recognising the strategic importance of this sector, the Health Committee at the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry has started preparing a framework of key themes and topics that will form the foundation for developing the infrastructure of medical and health tourism in the Sultanate of Oman, in alignment with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and with the aim of connecting the healthcare sector with various economic sectors.
Developing medical tourism requires a comprehensive vision that goes beyond establishing healthcare facilities alone.
It requires building an integrated system capable of attracting patients and investors from the region and around the world through the development of specialised hospitals and medical centres, encouraging local and foreign investments and strengthening public-private partnerships.
The success of this project depends on cooperation and integration among several sectors, including aviation, transportation, hospitality, tourism, insurance, logistics and medical education. This will create a complete patient journey, beginning with arrival in Oman, continuing through medical treatment and rehabilitation services; and extending to accommodation and wellness experiences.
Oman possesses many advantages that qualify it to become a regional hub for medical and health tourism.
These include its strategic geographical location, security and stability, distinguished international reputation in trade and cultural relations, as well as its diverse natural environment, which provides significant opportunities in wellness, rehabilitation and health-related tourism.
Furthermore, the historic relationship between Oman and the Republic of India, together with India’s advanced expertise in healthcare and medical services, opens wide opportunities for strategic cooperation in specialised treatments, establishing joint medical centres, exchanging expertise and developing national healthcare capabilities.
An essential component of this sector is the role of health insurance, as it represents a key element for the sustainability of medical tourism.
This can be achieved through developing specialised insurance products, establishing partnerships with international healthcare institutions; and facilitating access to medical services according to clear standards and procedures.
The project also requires a comprehensive regulatory and marketing framework that defines quality standards, accreditation requirements and mechanisms for attracting international patients, while promoting Oman as a trusted destination for healthcare services.
Investment in education, training and development of national professionals will ensure the long-term sustainability of this sector.
Medical and health tourism is not merely a healthcare project; it is an economic and developmental initiative that connects people, investment and knowledge.
Through effective cooperation between government entities and the private sector, Oman can establish a distinctive model that combines high-quality healthcare, tourism attractiveness and economic opportunities, strengthening its regional and international position.
