MUSCAT: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), represented by the Directorate General of Sports Activities, concluded the Sports Summer 2026 programme in Muscat Governorate after a season of training centres, open days and community sporting activities.
The closing ceremony was attended by Dr Mansour bin Sultan al Touqi, Sports Adviser at the Office of the Under-Secretary for Sports, Zayana bint Abdullah al Yaarubi, Director of the Specific Sports Bodies Department at the Directorate General of Sports Activities, participants and parents.
The programme attracted 1,630 beneficiaries across Muscat Governorate. It featured 16 training centres and nine open days, in addition to awareness workshops and community activities targeting different age groups.
More than 700 boys and girls participated in the training centres, while the open-day activities attracted around 950 beneficiaries.
This year’s programme included a badminton training centre for persons with disabilities, organised in cooperation with the Oman Paralympic Committee. The centre concluded with an inclusive open day featuring friendly matches involving players with and without disabilities.
The programme also launched its first girls’ football training centre in partnership with the Oman Football Association. The centre attracted 86 participants, reflecting growing interest in expanding sporting opportunities for girls.
Activities were extended across the wilayats of Muscat Governorate, including specialised swimming centres organised in cooperation with Al Dalafin Swimming Centre in Al Amerat and Al Seeb. The initiative enabled children to access swimming lessons closer to their homes while developing water-safety skills.
Ahlam al Khamisi, a member of the Sports Summer team in Muscat, said the programme, which began on June 15, aimed to make productive use of the summer holiday through sporting and awareness activities that develop children’s skills and promote healthy lifestyles.
She added that the swimming centre at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher provided advanced training for participants who had joined the programme in previous years.
The season also included a sports caravan in Hay Al Dhaher in the Wilayat of Qurayat, organised with local teams and community organisations. Around 350 people participated in traditional games, beach sports and group competitions.
Badriya al Jabri, a coach with the Oman Racket Sports Committee, said the badminton open day for persons with disabilities offered an inclusive sporting and social experience. She noted that the exercises were adapted to the participants’ physical and technical abilities, with a focus on developing skills, teamwork and self-confidence.
Mohammed bin Khamis al Subhi, a member of the Muscat Governorate team, said the closing programme featured three open sports days dedicated to persons with disabilities, football and mini-games.
The final day included football finals and badminton competitions, followed by the presentation of awards to the winners and recognition of the partners whose support contributed to the programme’s success.
