MUSCAT: The second edition of the 'Omani Eloquence Dictionary', authored by Eng Abul Qasim bin Mahmood al Kharousi, was published recently in a two-part book.
The second edition was published in a new format that facilitates reading and access to meanings and expressions. The first edition, published in 2004, was completely sold out due to its interesting content.
The dictionary is consistent with efforts to promote linguistic identity. It affirms the authenticity of colloquial Omani words, tracing them back to their origins in ancient Arabic dictionaries, including 'Al Ain,' 'Lissan Al Arab,' 'Al Qamoos Al Muheet,' and 'Taj Al Aroos'. It sought to establish the relationship between common Omani words and dictionary items.
'Omani Eloquence Dictionary' begins with a translation of the author’s biography and a review of his methodology in compiling the dictionary, in addition to two articles titled 'Oman and Quranic Verses' and 'Oman in the Arabic linguistic references'.
The sections of the dictionary are organised in alphabetical order, along with relevant linguistic roots. The author dedicates the final chapter to incorrect words. - ONA
