Heavy rain and storms leave dead and hundreds injured in China

Heavy rain and severe storms have killed several people in parts of China, state media reported on Tuesday, as authorities warned of further extreme weather.
In the central province of Hubei, storms killed 11 people and left one missing, while at least 275 others were injured after strong winds swept through the region overnight. Hundreds of residents were evacuated.
In the north-western province of Gansu, a landslide buried 33 people. Rescue teams had pulled 17 people to safety, while search operations were continuing, state news agency Xinhua reported.
President Xi Jinping ordered authorities to mobilize all available resources for rescue efforts and medical treatment of the injured.
The latest storms came a day after a dam breach at a reservoir in southern China triggered the country's highest flood alert. Four people were killed, eight were missing and tens of thousands were evacuated, according to official figures.
In Guangxi, southern China, remnants of a tropical storm have brought heavy rainfall to some areas since the weekend, with videos shared on social media showing flash floods.
China's weather authorities issued further heavy rain warnings for several provinces on Tuesday. At the same time, forecasters warned that Super Typhoon Bavi, packing sustained winds of more than 200 kilometres per hour, was moving towards south-eastern China. 
The storm is forecast to reach Taiwan on Saturday before making landfall in China later the same day.
China regularly experiences severe flooding during the summer rainy season, with meteorologists warning that this year's El Niño weather pattern could increase the risk of extreme weather.
