As the summer wind strengthens across Masirah Island, more kitesurfers, windsurfers and wing foilers are arriving to take advantage of one of the region’s most consistent wind seasons, as Oman continues to strengthen its reputation as an emerging adventure tourism destination.
Accommodation providers and instructors say visitor numbers have been increasing in recent weeks as adventure tourists from Europe and the Gulf make their way to the island. While some say overall numbers remain slightly below last year’s levels, something many attribute to ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting international travel, confidence remains high as more riders continue to arrive, with many choosing to stay for several weeks to make the most of the reliable conditions.
For many first-time visitors, Masirah has exceeded expectations. Drawn by its reliable winds, they have discovered an untouched paradise of wide sandy beaches, turquoise waters and uncrowded riding spots, offering an experience that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in more established wind sports destinations.
Unlike many popular kitesurfing locations around the world, Masirah remains largely unspoilt, allowing riders to enjoy long sessions on the water without crowded beaches or busy launch areas. The island’s natural setting, combined with warm temperatures and consistent winds generated by the southwest monsoon, has made it one of the Middle East’s best-kept secrets among the international kitesurfing community.
Marta, who travels annually from Dubai to spend the season in Masirah teaching kitesurfing and offering yoga sessions, said this year’s conditions arrived earlier than expected.
“The season actually started earlier than usual”, she said. “The wind conditions we had in May felt more like June, so we had excellent conditions from the beginning. Now the wind is becoming more consistent, more people are arriving and it’s exciting to see what the rest of the season brings”.
She said Masirah continues to attract visitors not only because of its reliable wind but also because of its peaceful setting, where riders can combine long days on the water with a slower pace of life, reconnect with nature and enjoy a close-knit international community that returns to the island every summer.
Visitors say the atmosphere is unlike many commercialised destinations, with people from different countries gathering on the beach each afternoon to share sessions, exchange experiences and introduce newcomers to the sport. For many, the appeal extends well beyond the wind itself, creating a lifestyle centred on the outdoors and the simplicity of island life.
Driven by the southwest monsoon, Masirah’s wind season attracts everyone from beginners learning the sport to experienced riders seeking long, uninterrupted sessions in open water. The seasonal influx of visitors also provides an important boost to local guesthouses, restaurants, transport providers and small businesses while supporting Oman’s growing adventure tourism sector.
As colourful kites fill the skies above the island once again, Masirah is reinforcing its reputation as one of the Middle East’s leading destinations for wind sports. With the season now gathering momentum, riders believe the island’s combination of consistent wind, unspoilt natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere will continue attracting returning visitors while introducing a new generation of adventure travellers to one of Oman’s most remarkable coastal destinations.
