MUSCAT, JUNE 15
Hafeet Rail has reached a major milestone in the development of the Oman-UAE railway connection, announcing 40 per cent completion of the cross-border project, underscoring steady progress on one of the region’s most strategic transport and logistics initiatives.
The 238-kilometre corridor, jointly developed by Etihad Rail, Oman Rail and Mubadala Investment Company, is designed to create a high-efficiency transport network aimed at strengthening trade flows, enhancing supply chain resilience and deepening economic integration between the Sultanate of Oman and the UAE.
Construction is currently underway across key locations, including Al Ain, Al Buraimi, Suhar and Wadi Al Jizzi, passing through diverse terrain ranging from urban centres and industrial zones to mountainous regions and wadis. The complexity of the route has required extensive engineering works, including large-scale excavation, bridges, tunnels and integrated flood protection systems to ensure long-term operational safety.
So far, more than 27 million cubic metres of earthworks have been completed, alongside over 100,000 cubic metres of concrete works. The project also includes 80 major structures, 900 concrete piles and 130 box culverts, reflecting the scale and pace of implementation.
Abdulrahman al Hatmi, CEO of Asyad Group, said the progress reflects a shared commitment to delivering the project on schedule, adding that the milestone builds on the foundations of Oman’s growing railway sector, with national talent playing a key role in execution.

Work is also advancing on supporting infrastructure in Suhar and Al Buraimi, aimed at enabling seamless connectivity between ports, industrial zones and logistics hubs, and facilitating efficient cross-border freight movement within an integrated regional network.
Ahmed al Hashemi, CEO of Hafeet Rail, said reaching 40 per cent completion reflects the strong foundations of the project. He noted that the next phase will focus on sustaining momentum, strengthening partner collaboration and delivering long-term value in line with international standards.
He also highlighted that the project has recorded 10 million safe man-hours without major injuries, underscoring strong safety systems, effective risk management and a deeply embedded safety culture across worksites.
The railway will feature advanced signalling, control and communication systems aligned with global standards, ensuring interoperability between Omani and Emirati networks while improving efficiency, capacity and operational reliability.
Beyond freight, the project is expected to pave the way for future passenger rail services, enhancing tourism and business mobility and strengthening social connectivity between the two countries. It also supports Oman Vision 2040 and the UAE’s development agenda by promoting economic diversification, sustainable infrastructure and reduced reliance on road transport.
As construction continues, the Hafeet Rail project stands as a symbol of deepening bilateral cooperation and a shared vision for a more connected and prosperous regional future.
