TRA seeks views on child social media rules

MUSCAT: Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched a public consultation on proposed regulations governing children's use of social media platforms, as authorities explore measures to strengthen online safety and digital protection for minors.
The consultation aims to gather feedback from stakeholders, technology companies, parents and the wider community on legal, regulatory and technical issues related to children's access to digital platforms.
Key areas under review include age-verification mechanisms, safeguards against inappropriate content, responsibilities of social media companies, and the role of parents in monitoring children's online activity.
The TRA said the initiative comes amid growing international efforts to regulate children's use of social media and address risks associated with digital platforms.
The authority is seeking public input to help shape legislation that is practical, enforceable and aligned with international best practices.
TRA has invited interested parties to participate in the consultation and submit recommendations that could contribute to developing a comprehensive regulatory framework for child protection in the digital environment. — ONA
