It's White Nights at St Petersburg

 

Imagine a sunset at midnight and all the streets come alive celebrating the extended day and life takes on a lively, 24-hour rhythm!!!
At midnight when one can only imagine pitch dark and life frozen in time, people look forward to venture out and enjoy the pale day with some cultural festivities while the Sun is still reluctant to hide in its abode!!!
It is the story of St Petersburg, Russia's cultural capital and the most happening place that recently hosted the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) bringing the world together and showing the vivacity of the city nights.


The 'White Nights' (Beliye Nochi) is a spectacular natural phenomenon occurring from late May to mid-July, and it reaches the peak between June 11 and July 2.
Due to the city's northern latitude, the sun never drops far enough below the horizon for the sky to go dark, resulting in nearly 19 hours of daylight and continuous rosy dusk throughout the night.
However, the White Nights are not just an astronomical phenomenon; rather, they are celebrated with a massive, city-wide festival packed with culture, music, and performance.


The St Petersburg Tourism Office says that the White Nights attract people frkm across the largest country and beyond. White Nights is a major tourist puller to its unique attractions.
'During white nights, the Mariinsky Theatre hosts a prestigious annual festival of classical ballet, opera, and orchestral performances while the Palace Square hosts massive open-air pop and rock concerts in the heart of the city, featuring internationally renowned artistes,' says a representative from the St Petersburg Tourism Office.


Adding glam and glitz to the day-nights, Peterhof and surrounding areas host historical re-enactments, carnivals, and events where participants dress in 18th-century royal garb.
While taking a night stroll along Nevsky Prospekt and the Palace Embankment, often referred to as 'the midnight sun' energises the visitor, watching the majestic Neva River drawbridges open against the glowing night sky is a quintessential feeling that help you etch in the St. Petersburg experience. Adding cream to the cake, taking a midnight boat tour under the glowing summer sky offers a unique vantage point of the city's illuminated architecture.


Yet another attraction to the White Nights is the culmination point of the season called Scarlet Sails (Alye Parusa) which is globally renowned marvel. Scarlet Sails celebration is held annually and giving it another face, Russian graduates are honoured and features an incredible water and light show culminating in the sailing of a tall ship with bright red sails along the Neva accompanied by a massive fireworks display and pyrotechnic show over the city.
