Muscat: Oman’s new head coach Tarik Sektioui made an unimpressive start as the Red Warriors slumped to a 3-0 loss against hosts Indonesia in a friendly international in Jakarta on Friday.
Indonesia, supported by a capacity home crowd at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, netted two goals in the first half and slotted in another within the first 10 minutes of the second half to seal the game in their favour.
This was the first win by Indonesia (Fifa ranking 122) against Oman (Fifa ranking 79) since 1988. Oman and Indonesia were also grouped together in the World Cup 2026 Qualifier Asia Round 4.
Indonesia’s first win in 38 matches against Oman also raised them to four Fifa rankings at 118.
Oman could not convert a penalty in the first half as Hatem al Rushaidi’s right-footed shot was saved by Indonesian goalkeeper Emil Audero in the 38th minute.
The penalty miss eventually spoiled a chance for Oman to come back into the game when they were trailing 2-0.
The match started with quick Indonesian attacks and they struck in the 13th minute with Justin Hubner headed in past Oman goalkeeper Ahmed al Rawahi after an assist by Nathan Tjoe-A-On.
Ole Romeny put Indonesia in the driver’s seat after his right-footed shot made the score 2-0.
Oman, who later missed a penalty kick, could not break through the Indonesian defence with their goalkeeper Audero in fine form.
In the second half, Oman, who employed a 4-4-2 formation against Indonesia 3-4-3, tried to rebuild a comeback effort.
However, Indonesia effectively sealed the game when Ragnar Oratmangoen scored their third goal after a solo fast attack on the flanks culminated in a left-foot shot that he dragged out of an Omani defender.
SEVEN SUBSTITUTIONS
Oman’s Moroccan coach Sektioui tried as many as seven substitutions during the match, but the team failed to settle into a rhythm and were unable to stop the Indonesian players' attacking moves.
Oman’s starting line-up saw Ahmed al Rawahi as the goalkeeper while Musab al Shaqsi, Ahmed al Khamisi, Yousuf al Maliki and Amjad al Harthy formed the defence. Zahir al Aghbari, Harib al Saadi, Abdullah Fawaz and Nasser al Rawahi were fielded in the middle while Mohsin al Ghassani and Hatim al Roushdi were the forwards.
Ibrahim al Rajhi, Musaab al Mamari, Ahmed al Kaabi, Mohammed al Ghafri, Hussain al Shahri, Jameel al Yahmadi and Ahad al Mashaikhi were all tested by Sektioui as substitutes.
The friendly was part of Oman’s overseas camp in Jakarta, which runs from May 29 to June 9.
The Red Warriors will meet Mozambique in another friendly on June 9.
The camp is part of Oman’s build-up for the Gulf Cup ‘Khaleeji 27’, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia in September, as well as the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027, which will be held early next year.
