Give value to youngsters to save them from drugs

Youth should be given value-oriented training and awareness from the childhood onwards so that their inclination towards drugs and psychotropic substances can be minimised effectively, according to experts.
'Value-oriented classes, assigning responsibilities, creating a purpose for life can deter youth from the clutches of drugs and other intoxicating and dangerous substances effectively,' said Dr Amira al Raidan, Supervisor for drug awareness and training at the Prevention Committee of the National committee for Narcotics and Psychotropic substances.
Speaking to the Observer on the sidelines of the 'Train the Trainer' programme organised by the Prevention Committee for Narcotics and Psychotropic substances in collaboration with Muscat Taafi Center, she said the number of drug addicts is rising.
'The rising number of drug addicts is the result of inappropriate caring and lack of timely intervention and needs to be addressed by the family, society and the NGOs and social workers as everyone has a role to play in bringing them back to life.' The specialised training programme in the field of addiction awareness was presented by a select group of specialists to prepare qualified lecturers in this vital field, such as Dr Asaad al Mousawi, Dr Amira al Raidan, Rashid al Wahaibi and Sulaiman al Kindi.
The one day programme comes in the wake of an increasing number of drug addiction among the youth, and to prepare qualified lecturers to raise awareness of the dangers of addiction and equip them with the necessary skills.
Major areas of attention were the role of the effective trainer, scientific planning, attracting and creating trainers, simplifying information and engaging trainees. The objectives of the programme involved preparing qualified lecturer, raising awareness of the dangers of addiction and equip them, with the necessary skills.
The one-of-its-kind programme envisaged that preparing master trainer will help the nation in delivering drug awareness messages as preventative measures.
