MUSCAT: The GCC states have recorded a 3 per cent annual decrease in groundwater extraction over the past nine years, concurrent with an increase in the share of renewable water resources to 25.5 per cent in 2024.
This indicator reflects the growing commitment to the implementation of sustainable water resource management policies.
Data issued by the GCC Statistical Center confirm that GCC member states continue to implement strategic directions aimed at enhancing the sustainability of water resources and achieving water security for future generations. These efforts focus on reducing dependence on groundwater and increasing the share of renewable water within the overall water resource system.
The data further indicate that this transition is taking place within the framework of Gulf-wide efforts to address challenges related to water scarcity and climate change, while improving the efficiency of water resource utilisation.
This is being achieved through the expansion of seawater desalination projects, the reuse of treated wastewater, and the adoption of modern technologies in water management and consumption rationalisation.
The growing contribution of renewable water to the water resource mix reflects the GCC states’ approach to diversifying water sources and alleviating pressure on groundwater reserves. This, in turn, supports sustainable development plans and reinforces regional water security in the upcoming phase.
