MUSCAT: The national para athletics team will resume intensive training on Sunday at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher as part of its ongoing preparations for upcoming international assignments, including the Grand Prix in Tunisia from June 16 to 19, 2026, and the Asian Championship in Japan next October.
The training programme comes as part of the Oman Paralympic Committee’s efforts to raise the technical and physical readiness of the athletes and increase the number of qualifiers for the Asian event. Eight athletes have already secured their places in the continental championship following the qualifiers held recently in Morocco.
A total of 20 male and female athletes are taking part in the current preparatory programme under the supervision of the national technical staff, led by head coach Sami al Zarli, alongside national coaches Awf al Maamari, Abdullah al Anbari and Asaad al Qarni.
The programme includes specialised track-and-field sessions, gym-based physical conditioning and focused technical drills designed to improve performance ahead of the next stage of competition.
The squad includes Mohammed al Mashaikhi, Taha al Harrasi, Mohammed al Qasmi, Fawzi al Hubaishi, Talib al Balushi, Sultan al Sinani, Maktoum al Muqbali, Qusai al Rawahi, Othman al Habsi, Saif al Muqaibli, Saqr al Qasmi, Maryam al Badi, Sharifa al Hatmi, Sarah al Anbouri, Rawan al Hasani, Shaikha al Hammadi, Aisha al Balushi, Iman al Shamsi, Amer al Rashdi and Muhanna Awlad Thani.
IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY
The team’s participation in the Tunisia Grand Prix represents an important opportunity for athletes who did not compete in the Morocco qualifiers to achieve the required qualification marks and join their teammates who have already booked their places for the Asian Championship.
The event will also serve as a key technical test for the squad, offering the athletes valuable exposure and competitive experience against strong international participants in para athletics.
Coach Abdullah al Anbari said the technical staff is dealing with the current phase with great focus, as it represents an important step in the team’s preparation for the coming assignments.
The team includes a group of ambitious athletes who are eager to improve and compete at higher levels. During this period, we are working to prepare them in the best possible way, both technically and physically. The Tunisia Grand Prix will be an important station for achieving new qualification marks, and our target is to increase the number of athletes who qualify for the Asian Championship, Al Anbari said.
He added that the training programme is progressing according to a clear plan that takes into consideration the different events and levels of the athletes.
He added, We have seen clear progress in performance and commitment during the recent period, and this gives us confidence that the athletes can deliver positive results in the upcoming competitions.
The Oman Paralympic Committee is looking to make the most of the coming stage by providing the team with the right environment to compete strongly in Tunisia, while continuing its efforts to expand Oman’s representation at the Asian Championship in Japan and strengthen the presence of Omani para athletics at the continental level.
