MUSCAT: The Embassy of Nepal in Muscat organised a tourism promotion event to mark Sagarmatha Day (Mt Everest Day) at Nepal House on May 21, celebrating the spirit of adventure, mountaineering and Nepal’s rich tourism potential.
Among the distinguished guests was Nadira al Harthy, the first Omani woman to summit Mount Everest.
Dornath Aryal, Ambassador of Nepal to the Sultanate of Oman, who inaugurated the event by lighting the traditional Panas lamp, highlighted the historical significance of Sagarmatha Day, describing Mt Everest as a symbol of courage, perseverance and human determination. He also stressed the growing global challenge of climate change and its impact on the Himalayas and ocean ecosystems.
The Ambassador highlighted Nepal’s efforts in climate dialogue, referring to the launch of the first edition of the Sagarmatha Sambaad in 2025, aimed at fostering global discussions on climate change.
The event commemorated the first successful ascent of Mount Everest (Sagarmatha) on May 29, 1953, by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary. It also aimed to promote Nepal’s tourism, particularly mountaineering and adventure travel opportunities.
The programme was attended by mountaineers, hikers, representatives from the tourism and travel sectors, media professionals, social media influencers and friends of Nepal.
During the event, Nadira al Harthy shared her personal experiences of climbing Mt Everest, reflecting on the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas and Nepal. She encouraged participants to pursue their ambitions with determination and to explore the Himalayas as a journey of self-discovery.
In recognition of her remarkable achievements in mountaineering and her contribution to promoting mountain adventure, Ambassador Aryal honoured Nadira al Harthy during the ceremony.
A promotional video showcasing Nepal’s mountains, landscapes, culture and traditions was screened, while specially designed photo frames highlighting Nepal’s scenic beauty and mountain ranges were distributed to attendees.
The celebration concluded with a traditional Nepali dinner hosted by the embassy, alongside a tourism presentation featuring Nepal’s heritage and attractions.
As part of the Sagarmatha Day celebrations, the embassy will organise an early morning peace walk and beach-cleaning event on May 29 at Qurum Beach. The programme will begin in front of the W Muscat and will run from 5 am to 5:45 am. Ambassador Aryal invited participants and members of the public to join the initiative promoting environmental awareness and community engagement.
