Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) announced on Sunday the launch of special commemorative vehicle license plates for the Khareef Dhofar 2026 season.
The initiative offers motorists a unique opportunity to feature a custom-designed plate celebrating one of the Sultanate's most popular seasonal events. The commemorative plates feature a distinct design, incorporating the 'Khareef Dhofar 2026' branding alongside standard registration details.
According to the ROP announcement, vehicle owners can easily submit their requests through multiple convenient channels starting ahead of the season. Applications can be made via:
- Service Centers:
- ROP Website:
- ROP Mobile App:
It has been specified that these commemorative plates will have a fixed period of validity, active from June 1 until December 31, 2026
According to the ROP, the commemorative plates will be issued using the vehicle’s existing registration number.
The ROP emphasised that all standard vehicle registration rules, traffic laws, and insurance regulations will apply normally to vehicles sporting the special plates.
Meanwhile, the ROP issued Ministerial Decision No. 74/2026, amending several provisions of the Executive Regulations of the Traffic Law.
The new amendments officially introduce 'Commemorative License Plates' for vehicles, along with their associated fees and penalties.
This legislative update coincides with the ROP's announcement regarding the roll-out of these special plates for the upcoming Khareef Dhofar 2026.
The newly issued decision introduces a new clause titled 'Commemorative' under Article (2) of the Executive Regulations of the Traffic Law.
It also adds a new article permitting the issuance of these commemorative number plates under specific conditions, stipulating that their use will be strictly limited to the duration and purpose determined by the relevant authority.
According to the amendments, these special plates have been added to the official annex governing metal plate types and dimensions, ensuring they match the design approved by the administration. The decision has set a fee of RO 70 to obtain a commemorative license plate, which has been added to the fee schedule of the Traffic Law's Executive Regulations.
To ensure compliance, the amendments feature a new traffic violation added to the traffic fines and points schedule.
The decision states that any previous regulations contradicting or conflicting with these new amendments are cancelled, and the decision will come into effect the day after its publication in the Official Gazette.
