Oman, India highlight share maritime history

NEW YORK: The Permanent missions of the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of India to the United Nations in New York organised an event entitled ‘Ancient Trade Routes: The Voyage of INSV Kaundinya' showcasing the voyage of the Indian Navy’s sailing ship which departed from Porbandar Port in the Indian state of Gujarat on December 29, 2025, and arrived at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat on January 14, 2026.
Omar bin Said al Kathiri, Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations, explained that the INSV Kaundinya’s voyage evokes the long-standing and strong relationship between Oman and the Republic of India, a relationship that has flourished in the heart of the Indian Ocean for centuries adding that the INSV Kaundinya’s visit to the Sultanate of Oman is a testament to the deep-rooted ties that bind the two friendly nations.
He reviewed the legacy of the maritime partnership between the Sultanate of Oman and India as both countries sought to build bridges of communication between civilisations, pointing to the role played by ports such as Muscat, Sur, and Mumbai as vital gateways for trade and cultural exchange across the globe.
He added that the spirit of cooperation which characterised the relationship between Oman and India inspires the adoption of collaborative approaches in managing marine resources and preserving biodiversity.
This spirit has demonstrated leadership in promoting responsible fishing practices, combating marine pollution, and supporting scientific research through the exchange of expertise, contributing to a global vision of sustainable and productive oceans accessible to all and serving the interests of future generations.
The Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, explained that the voyage of the Indian ship ‘INSV Kaundinya underscores the long-standing maritime relationship between the Sultanate of Oman and India.

It also recalls the rich maritime traditions of trade and cultural exchange between India and the countries of the Arabian Gulf region, and the role these traditions have played in enhancing the deep-rooted relations between India and the region.
The National Museum of Oman displayed a video that highlighted the Omani-Indian relations across different eras and civilisations. The video reflected the rich cultural, historical and civilisational heritage shared by Oman and India throughout history, and its impact on the deep historical ties that continue to resonate at present.
Dr Adnan bin Rashid al Azri, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman for Continental Shelf and Maritime Affairs, spoke about joint projects between the two countries in the fields of marine science, the aquatic environment, and water management.
The event saw active participation from delegations representing the countries overlooking the Indian Ocean and Europe.
A delegation from the Indian Navy and the crew of the ship INSV Kaundinya highlighted the efforts undertaken by the Indian Navy to rebuild the vessel and the training phases they underwent to prepare for the voyage. They expressed their appreciation for the warm welcome they received upon their arrival in the Sultanate of Oman.
The event was attended by a number of dignitaries, representatives of member states to the United Nations, officials from UN offices, and staff of diplomatic missions in New York. — ONA
