Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman recorded a sharp decline in traffic accidents during 2025, with the total number of reported accidents falling to 1,545, marking a 17 per cent decrease compared to 2024, according to newly released data by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

The figures reflect continued efforts by authorities to improve road safety across the Sultanate through stricter enforcement, awareness campaigns and infrastructure upgrades aimed at reducing accidents and protecting lives.

Road safety has remained a national priority in recent years as Oman continues to invest in safer highways, smart traffic systems and public awareness initiatives targeting speeding, distracted driving and seatbelt compliance.

According to NCSI, Muscat recorded the highest number of traffic accidents in 2025 with 271 cases, followed by South Al Batinah at 246, Al Dakhiliyah at 240 and Dhofar with 237 accidents. Musandam reported the lowest number at 26 cases, while Al Dhahirah recorded 70 accidents.

Vehicle collisions remained the leading cause of accidents, accounting for 661 incidents, followed by run-over cases involving pedestrians at 320 incidents, falls at 312 and collisions with fixed objects at 252.

Among the fatalities recorded, 354 Omanis lost their lives, including 67 women, while 241 expatriates died, among them 31 women.

The data also showed a continued decline in speeding-related incidents, which dropped from 1,009 cases in 2023 to 768 in 2024, before falling further to 674 in 2025.

Meanwhile, the ROP repeatedly stressed the importance of responsible driving behaviour, particularly during peak travel seasons and holidays, when traffic movement increases across the country.

The decline in accidents also comes amid ongoing cooperation between government agencies to strengthen traffic monitoring and emergency response systems, alongside campaigns encouraging families to adopt safer road practices.
