Oman-Canada: 50 years of shared commitment towards peace

Muscat: Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, arrived in the Sultanate on Wednesday for a visit to strengthen relations with the two countries and explore new opportunities for collaboration on shared priorities.
The first official visit by a Canadian foreign minister to Oman in more than ten years reflected the positive trajectory of bilateral relations over the past 50 years and underscored the shared commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
Canada established diplomatic relations with Oman in 1974, and in 2025, merchandise trade between Canada and Oman was valued at $222 million.
Canada and Oman share common objectives in the areas of international peace and social and economic development. Our relations are very cordial. Oman has pursued a pragmatic foreign policy, frequently mediating between its neighbours.
While Canada is represented by the Embassy to Saudi Arabia in Riyadh, it has an honorary consul in Muscat. Oman is represented in Canada by an embassy in Washington, DC
According to an official statement, Canada and the Sultanate of Oman share common objectives in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development, and maintain cordial bilateral relations.
Canada exports a large variety of merchandise to Oman, with the primary goods being machinery, cereals, electronics, and scientific and precision instruments. The top merchandise imports from Oman in 2025 were iron and steel, aluminum, electronics, and plastics.
Oman has been a member of Canada’s Military Training Cooperation Program since 1980, and its military personnel have participated in several courses and training opportunities. In both Canada and Oman, education is a high priority, and the Government of Oman offers annual scholarships to its citizens to pursue higher education in Canada.
The official statement said that both sides will also discuss defence and economic cooperation that aligns Canadian expertise with the priorities of Oman Vision 2040.
The minister will also exchange perspectives on regional developments with representatives of the two countries, to gain insights into sustained efforts and coordination in support of the safe and unhindered passage of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
