MUSCAT: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), represented by the Leadership Development Centre, launched a three-day training programme titled 'Management and Organisation of Sports Events' at Radisson Hotel Muscat Panorama in Bausher on Tuesday.
The programme, which runs from May 12 to 14, has attracted wide participation from sports bodies, including clubs, committees and associations. It forms part of the ministry’s efforts to develop national competencies working in the sports sector and equip them with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to plan, organise and evaluate sports events.
The opening day focused on strategic planning and institutional organisation, highlighting the importance of preparing effective plans that support the successful delivery of events and help achieve their objectives. Participants were also introduced to practical models designed to strengthen their ability to deal with different organisational challenges.
The programme will continue over the coming days with specialised sessions covering financial management, sports marketing, corporate communication, legal aspects, risk management, event evaluation and impact measurement. These areas are expected to contribute to raising the efficiency of sports administration and supporting long-term sustainability in the sector.
Dr Sulaiman bin Ali al Balushi, lecturer of the programme, said the course targets officials responsible for delivering sports events at different levels.
Sports events vary in size, nature, format and target audience. Therefore, the programme discusses the core concepts of sports events, planning mechanisms according to the scale of each event, marketing and communication tools, risk management, evaluation and the process of building working teams and committees from the beginning until the end of the event, he said.
He added that the closing part of the programme will focus on assessing events and identifying ways to improve future editions.
Dr Sulaiman praised the level of the participants, noting that many of them already have solid experience in organising sports activities through clubs, committees, federations and the Oman Olympic Committee.
“This creates a challenge for the lecturer, but it also enriches the programme. We are keen to encourage the exchange of experience among participants, while adding new knowledge and developing their existing skills,” he added.
IMPROVING PERFORMANCE
Saud al Qanoubi, representing the Oman Camel Racing Federation, said the programme would help improve performance in the workplace and support better administrative planning.
He added that the course is important for understanding objectives, vision and organisational planning, especially in relation to camel racing events. We benefited from the discussions on setting goals and aligning them with practical work in the sports environment.
Abdulhussain al Shaibani, member of the Oman Billiards and Snooker Committee, said the programme is important for sports bodies organising local and international events, as it covers event management, risk handling, promotion and investment.
He added that such specialised courses support the committee’s efforts to host major competitions and improve organisational standards.
Ruqaiya al Lawati, representing Seeb Club, said the course will help clubs improve the way they plan and organise sports activities.
She added that Seeb Club has organised several events, but such workshops help address small details, reduce mistakes and improve future work.
