MUSCAT, MAY 9
Sohar Club wrote a new chapter in their history after winning their first official football title with a 1-0 victory over Al Nahda in the final of the Jetour Football Cup for the 2025-2026 season at Al Rustaq Sports Complex.
The final was held under the auspices of Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism, in a memorable night for Sohar supporters as their team finally ended a long wait for silverware.
The match carried contrasting ambitions for both sides. Al Nahda entered the final looking to add another title to their season after winning His Majesty’s Cup, while Sohar were chasing a historic first trophy after 54 years.
The opening half was played at a high tempo, with both teams showing caution in structure but creating clear chances. Sohar’s Spanish coach Juan Gonzalez, relied on defensive stability and patient build-up from the back, while Al Nahda, coached by Algerian Mahdi Laawamel, tried to impose their technical quality and experience.
Al Nahda had the first attempt in the third minute through Mohammed al Ghafri, before Sohar responded four minutes later when Abdullah al Balushi missed a good opportunity. Al Nahda’s foreign forward Amir Alaa then wasted a clear chance in the 10th minute, while Sohar’s Mohammed al Hamadani came close in the 15th minute with a powerful shot.
Despite several dangerous moments at both ends, neither team managed to break the deadlock before the interval, as the first half ended goalless.
Al Nahda began the second half with more urgency and almost opened the scoring in the 55th minute when Mohammed al Ghafri’s header was cleared by Sohar’s defence. Sohar gradually regained their rhythm, and in the 71st minute Al Nahda goalkeeper Fayez al Rushaidi produced a fine save to deny a strong effort from M Keita.
The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute when substitute Mohammed al Mujaini struck a left-footed shot from inside the penalty area to give Sohar the lead. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Sohar fans and placed Al Nahda under pressure in the closing stages.
Al Nahda pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Sohar goalkeeper Majdi al Ajmi and his defensive line stood firm to repel repeated attacks. The final whistle confirmed a historic 1-0 victory for Sohar and sealed the club’s first official title.
CLEAR TARGET
Speaking after the match, Sohar player Mazin al Saadi said the team entered the final with one clear target: to lift the trophy. This victory did not come by chance. From the start of the season, the team has been fighting hard. From the first minute of the final, we played with belief and proved that we deserved to win. We are very happy to achieve this historic title for Sohar, he said.
Sohar’s Salim al Shabibi also described the final as a tough contest, but said the team’s effort and determination made the difference. 'It was a difficult match, but we worked very hard, and we deserved this title. We are proud to represent Sohar Club and to give it its first championship. This is a special moment for everyone, and we hope to achieve more in the future,' he said.
The triumph marked a turning point for the 'Crocodiles', who overcame one of Oman’s strongest teams and delivered a night that will remain firmly etched in the memory of Sohar Club and their supporters.
