Workers’ Day highlights labour progress in Oman

MUSCAT: The General Federation of Oman Workers marked International Workers' Day with a ceremony reaffirming the importance of trade unions in enhancing labour conditions across the private sector. The event also recognised recipients of the 2025 Trade Union Award and was held under the auspices of Dr Hilal bin Ali al Sabti, Minister of Health.
Speaking at the event, Chairman Nabhan bin Ahmed al Batashi said Oman’s recent economic and developmental progress reflects the effectiveness of national strategies aimed at building a diversified and sustainable economy. He emphasised that economic growth must translate into improved living standards, job security and social stability for workers.
The federation launched a media campaign to promote stronger social protection systems, with particular focus on safeguarding workers against termination and ensuring stability during periods of unemployment. The ceremony also reviewed key achievements and indicators from the federation’s 2025 annual report, alongside the unveiling of the artwork “Oman’s Arms”.
In addition, cooperation agreements were signed with Petroleum Development Oman and a memorandum of understanding with Oman Energy Society (OPAL), highlighting the role of dialogue between employers and labour representatives. The number of labour unions in Oman reached around 340 by the end of 2025. — ONA
