Al Batinah North launches plastic-free workplace initiative

SUHAR: A project to reduce plastic use in government workplaces has been launched in Al Batinah North Governorate, targeting more than 500 employees across five institutions in its first phase.
The ‘Plastic-Free Work Environment’ initiative, introduced by the Environment Authority in cooperation with the Governor’s Office, was launched under the auspices of Shaikh Saud bin Mohammed al Hinai, Wali of Suhar.
The initiative forms part of broader national efforts to promote sustainable practices in the workplace, reduce plastic consumption and encourage responsible behaviour among employees.
Project manager Safiya bint Musa al Zadjali said the programme will run until November, featuring phased awareness campaigns and practical measures.
Key steps include replacing plastic bottles with glass or reusable alternatives, promoting eco-friendly bags, and conducting awareness programmes to highlight the environmental impact of plastic use.
The first phase covers five entities: the Governor’s Office, the Directorate-General of Labour, the Directorate-General of Consumer Protection, the Department of Heritage and Tourism, and Al Batinah North Municipality.
The initiative will be implemented gradually to ensure measurable behavioural change and effective results.
Aligned with the environmental objectives of Oman Vision 2040, the project underscores the role of government institutions in advancing sustainability and fostering a greener future. — ONA
