Oman set for 11-sport campaign at GCC Games

MUSCAT: The Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) will take part in the 4th GCC Games Doha 2026 which is taking place during May 11 to 22. Oman’s representation in this prestigious gulf sporting event will be in 11 sports including: athletics, volleyball, Fencing, Taekwondo, Karate, Basketball, Bowling, Shooting, Snooker and billiards, Table tennis and Aquatics.
The selection of the above sports came after a series of meetings of the technical staff and officials at these associations and committees which was held by the Planning and Following-up Committee in the past months. The committee reviewed the national team’s plan and expectations in the upcoming participation at the GCC Games in Doha. The chances of Oman to gain the medals are high in this participation as Oman athletes are in best shape in many sports to clinch the medals following a comprehensive training sessions in a scheduled training camps.
The national sporting teams had achieved in the last edition in 2022 in Kuwait 29 medals including 12 gold, 5 silver, and 12 bronze medals. It was a good progress compared to the number of games in which they had participated as they were able to break the record for the number of gold medals achieved in the first tournament which was held in Bahrain in 2011, which had a total of 11 medals, including 4 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals. In the second tournament which was held in Dammam, Saudi Arabia in 2015, the Sultanate of Oman athletes had managed to achieve 29 medals including 4 gold, 13 silver, and 12 bronze medals.
On the other hand, the hosts Qatar are gearing up to host these games as the committees are working in close coordination to complete every logistical, technical, and organisational detail, ensuring a memorable edition of the Games. The event will bring together an elite field of athletes from across the Gulf Cooperation Council nations, competing in 19 different sports, including handball, table tennis, athletics, squash, padel, fencing, boxing, taekwondo, karate, swimming, billiards, snooker, basketball (5x5 and 3x3), shooting, archery, volleyball, equestrian, and bowling, highlighting the diversity of competition and enhancing the sporting and fan appeal of the event.
