MUSCAT: The Oman Basketball Association (OBA) will launch the first-ever Athletes Preparation Centres Basketball League on Friday and Saturday, marking a new step towards creating a competitive environment for player development, assessing the work of training centres, and reinforcing the educational and technical aspects of the game.
A total of six training centres will take part in the inaugural league. They are Seeb Club and Al Amerat Club from Muscat Governorate, Nizwa Club and Al Bashayer Club from Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, Salalah Club from Dhofar Governorate, and Sohar Sports Complex from Al Batinah North Governorate. All matches will be staged at the sub hall of Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher.
The opening round on Friday will feature three matches. Salalah Club will take on Sohar Sports Complex at 9 am, while Al Bashayer Club will face Al Amerat Club at 2 pm. The final match of the day will see Seeb Club meet Nizwa Club at 4 pm.
The second round will be held on Saturday, April 25, with another three fixtures. Al Bashayer Club will meet Salalah Club at 9 am, followed by Nizwa Club against Sohar Sports Complex at 11 am. The round will conclude at 1 pm with Seeb Club facing Al Amerat Club.
WEEKEND SCHEDULE
League matches will be held only on Fridays and Saturdays each weekend, with every centre playing two matches per week. The competition is designed within a technical framework that focuses on developing players and giving them valuable competitive experience, in line with the objectives of the Athletes Preparation Centres in discovering talent and refining skills.
When preparing the competition schedule, the OBA took into account the circumstances of the targeted age group, most of whom are school students. Matches were therefore scheduled on weekends to avoid clashes with the school week and to ensure a balance between academic commitments and sporting development.
The initiative reflects the OBA’s efforts to build a strong and sustainable foundation for basketball in Oman by providing a competitive platform that helps develop players, coaches and new referees, while also measuring the participants’ technical, physical and psychological progress.
The association had earlier stressed that the launch of the league forms part of its wider vision to invest in youth categories and build a promising generation capable of representing clubs and national teams in the future. The league is regarded as an important milestone in the development of Omani basketball as it offers a genuine competitive setting to measure players’ progress, sharpen their technical and physical abilities, strengthen their mental and competitive qualities, and give national coaches the opportunity to assess their players, analyse matches, correct mistakes and build on positives.
