Oman has opened a new chapter in its cultural landscape with the launch of Art and Place, the Sultanate’s first dedicated environmental art festival, positioning creativity as a dialogue with the natural world.
Held from April 5 to April 9 at the Botanical Garden of Sultan Qaboos University, the week-long event unfolded as a living exhibition rather than a static display. Artworks were not simply presented but continuously developed on site, allowing visitors to witness the creative process as it happened.
The festival brought together eleven Omani environmental artists alongside international contributors from Hungary, Algeria and Egypt, all based in Oman. This cross-cultural participation created a rich exchange of ideas and techniques while remaining rooted in a shared focus on ecological themes.
Organised by the Department of Art Education, with oversight from a research group and the “Colors of Art” collective in collaboration with the College of Science, the initiative placed equal emphasis on artistic innovation and public environmental awareness. By moving art into natural and public spaces, the organisers encouraged works to respond directly to their surroundings.
A key feature of the programme was its live production format. Artists created and adapted their work in real time, offering audiences insight into decision making, material choices and site-specific approaches. This level of openness transformed the visitor experience into an active engagement rather than passive observation.
Students from the “Colors of Art” group participated alongside the artists, gaining hands-on experience and mentorship. The initiative aimed to develop both technical skills and a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility among emerging creatives.
Dr. Amal al Ismaili, the event organiser, described the festival as a milestone for contemporary art in Oman. She noted that Art and Place moves beyond traditional exhibition formats by redefining the relationship between artist, environment and audience. By situating art within the landscape, the festival positions creative practice as both shaped by and responsive to place.
The participating artists included Sid Ahmed Bettahar, Khalil Mohammed Salim al Salmi, Dr. Ayman Elsadek El Semary, Sara Khalifa Fadhil al Harrasi, Anetta Szabo, Dr. Amal Salim Khalfan al Ismaili, Salim Khamis Zahir a Salami, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Hafeez Haroun, Dr. Salman Amur Salim al Hajri and Sami Salim Saif al Siyabi.
As its first edition concludes, Art and Place sets the foundation for future initiatives that connect creativity with environmental awareness. Organisers hope the festival will continue to grow as a platform where art, research and community engagement intersect, contributing to a more sustainable and culturally dynamic future for Oman.
