MUSCAT: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), in collaboration with the Omani Association for Persons with Hearing Disabilities, will organise a symposium on Sunday under the title 'Toward an Inclusive University: Prospects for Admitting Students with Hearing Disabilities into Higher Education Institutions'.
The symposium coincides with Arab Deaf Week, reflecting a national commitment to enhancing inclusive education opportunities and reinforcing the principles of equity and equal access within higher education institutions.
The symposium aims to raise societal and university-wide awareness of the right of students with hearing disabilities to enrol in higher education, while establishing an academic and discursive platform bringing together decision-makers, academics, specialists, civil society organisations, and the students themselves. Discussions will focus on the current state of university admission policies, challenges related to making higher education accessible to this group, and the presentation of best practices in inclusive education at both local and international levels.
The symposium will explore the role of art education as an effective pathway for empowerment and inclusive learning, alongside presenting field experiences and inspiring success stories of students with hearing disabilities — highlighting their abilities and potential for academic and social integration.
The symposium programme includes academic papers, training workshops, and presentations of pioneering experiences and success stories. It targets faculty members, administrative staff, students, specialists in special education and art education, as well as civil society institutions, parents, relevant authorities, and media representatives. — ONA
