MUSCAT: Twelve mothers from across Oman were honoured at the launch of the 'Ideal Mother Award for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities,' recognising their dedication, patience and lifelong care for children with intellectual disabilities.
The humanitarian initiative also paid tribute to veteran social workers who have contributed for decades to awareness and support efforts in this field.
The ceremony, held under the auspices of HH Sayyidah Dr Mona bint Fahd al Said, Assistant Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation at SQU, brought together mothers from all governorates, from Musandam to Dhofar, highlighting inspiring personal stories of resilience and commitment.
The award is part of the 'Motherhood' initiative under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, and falls within the Youth Initiatives Support Programme aimed at empowering volunteer and non-profit efforts serving the community.
The event also honoured seven pioneering women in disability-related volunteer work dating back to the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, recognising their long-standing contributions to society.
The initiative was supported by Al Yusr Charitable Foundation, whose chairperson Shaikha Amina bint Saud Bahwan al Mukhaini has played a key role in advancing community and humanitarian programmes.
Ahood bint Khalfan al Siyabi, head of the “Motherhood” initiative, said the idea stemmed from a personal experience of growing up with a sister with intellectual disabilities, inspiring the launch of a national platform to honour mothers across Oman.
Omar bin Mohammed bin Abdullah al Farsi, General Manager, Al Yusr Charitable Foundation, said the support reflects the foundation’s commitment to empowering mothers who play a vital caregiving role in supporting persons with disabilities.
He added that the initiative aims to ensure representation from all governorates and recognise both mothers and volunteers working in this field.
The organisers said the award highlights the importance of social appreciation for caregiving roles and strengthens community awareness around support for persons with disabilities.
Speaking at the event, HH Sayyidah Hujaija bint Jaifer al Said, Chairperson of the Association for Children with Disabilities, said inspiring stories of dedication 'deserve to be told with pride,' adding that the initiative sends a message of gratitude to every mother who has shown exceptional patience and commitment.
The honourees included Raya bint Saif al Riyami, Huda bint Abdullah al Ghazali, Shakour bint Mohammed al Ghamari, Dr Muna bint Mahfoodh al Munthari, Barka bint Shahbal al Bakri, Sabah bint Mohammed al Bahlani and Dr Kaltham bint Mohammed al Zadjali.
